This mixed-media embroidered piece by artist Jill Snyder Wallace of Minot will be among her works on display through September and October at Maine Fiberarts in Topsham.

My thanks to Christine Macchi, executive director of Maine Fiberarts, for providing this information:

Intricate embroidered work and textile-inspired assemblages incorporating found objects by artist Jill Snyder Wallace of Minot are on display through September and October at Maine Fiberarts’ Gallery, 13 Main St., Topsham. The exhibition, “Human Nature,” represents work the artist has created since 2010. A reception to meet the artist will be held 2-5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 29. Minot will speak about her work 2:30-3 p.m. The event is free and the public is invited to attend.

Snyder Wallace will lead a workshop, “Expressive Line Embroidery,” 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, at Maine Fiberarts. Participants will create simple blind contour drawings of their own hand or foot. Using the “couching” technique, line drawings will be transferred to fabric. Helpful tips for embroidery also will be offered. Students should bring a variety of threads in different weights and colors, a six-inch embroidery hoop, needles and scissors.

An affinity for the aesthetics of the Victorian era continues to be relevant to Snyder Wallace. She creates wall-mounted and freestanding works with surface embroidery and counted thread techniques. “The slow, contemplative nature of hand embroidery lends itself to cerebral gymnastics,” Snyder Wallace said. Found objects in her work add depth and meaning allowing the viewer to make their own associations.

Exhibiting throughout the United States, Snyder Wallace is active in the Embroiderers’ Guild of America, Surface Design Association, Maine Fiberarts and Women’s Caucus for Art.

For more than 13 years, Maine Fiberarts has hosted two- and three-month exhibitions of fiber work by Maine artists. The group has added hands-on workshops to its fall programming and just launched a new Fiber Folio about travels to studios and farms throughout Maine at folio.mainefiberarts.org.

Gallery hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturdays, 11-2.
